PROVIDENCE, RI – Shawmut was honored to participate in this year’s Canstruction Rhode Island competition that brings contractors, architects, and engineers together to construct sculptures made entirely of canned food. The annual event, held at the Providence Place Skybridge Concourse, benefits the Rhode Island Community Food Bank by donating over 30,000 cans of food used to construct the sculptures to the organization.
At this year’s competition, the Shawmut team partnered with LLB Architects to bring “left shark” from Super Bowl XLIX to life. At the awards gala held on March 24, the Shawmut team was awarded with both the Structural Ingenuity and People’s Choice honors for their construction of the nine-foot-tall structure that included a shark, field goal, palm tree, and beach ball.
Behind the competition of building enormous sculptures from canned food is the goal to raise awareness of food insecurity. Since 1992, Canstruction has raised nearly 40 million pounds of food both locally and internationally through their collaborative competitions.
