Shawmut History

In 1982, Jim Ansara founded Shawmut with just a handful of employees and a unique vision for a construction company. Jim specialized in building projects with complex and difficult conditions (the types of projects other construction managers didn’t want), completing them on fast-track schedules, and providing exceptional customer service. The market responded positively to Jim’s refreshing approach to the construction process as Shawmut quickly set itself apart as one of New England’s most successful start-up companies.

Jim served as Shawmut’s President/Chief Executive Officer for 18 years before assuming the position of Chairman and handing the company reins over to Tom Goemaat. During his tenure as President/CEO, Jim established Shawmut as one of New England’s most respected construction companies and as an industry leader positioned within our market focus areas. Today, Jim works closely with CEO Tom Goemaat and President and COO Bill Hughes on Shawmut's Board of Directors.

Under the leadership of Tom and Bill, Shawmut has become a leader in each of our markets and one of the country's largest and most disciplined construction managers and general contractors. In addition to leading the company’s smart growth plan, Tom and Bill are focused on the development of Shawmut’s staff as well as the protection and proliferation of our unique culture. Bill is focused on Shawmut’s operations, ensuring that our employees have the tools and training to deliver service well above the industry average, while Tom focuses on client relations, ensuring that our extremely high standards of client service are upheld.
