Shawmut Named to Environmental League of Massachusetts Corporate Council

Alliance recognizes, unifies leaders in environmental stewardship and advocacy

Boston, MA – December 5, 2008 – Shawmut Design and Construction, a leading national construction management firm, has been named a member of a new alliance which recognizes leadership in green business practices. The Environmental League of Massachusetts Corporate Council will advocate for responsible public policy that supports both a healthy economy and a healthy environment.

The alliance aims to bridge the environmental community with companies which have demonstrated initiative with their environmentally-conscious policies and procedures – and, to demonstrate that preserving the environment can actually help businesses save money. Shawmut, in particular, brings to the table a record of responsibility with green building best practices including construction and demolition waste recycling, indoor air quality management, and green jobsite practices such as site office recycling, energy conservation, emissions control, and informational site signage. In addition, Shawmut is a member of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and is actively involved with projects designed and constructed in compliance with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) standards. Moreover, 33 staff members hold LEED-Accreditation, and the company manages 24 LEED-Certified or registered construction projects.

“We are honored to have been selected as a member of the council,” said Shawmut CEO Tom Goemaat. “This recognition is a testament to Shawmut’s continued leadership in environmental consciousness and sustainable practices.” Shawmut will join a list of companies that includes Genzyme, for its award-winning LEED-Platinum headquarters; Millipore, for its commitment to greenhouse gas emission reduction; Stop & Shop, for its new “green” stores and recycling policies; and NSTAR, for its leadership in energy conservation. Legal Sea Foods, the Saunders Hotel Group, Grossman Marketing, Triumvirate Environmental and Cape Wind add to the distinguished panel.

ELM President George Bachrach added, "The notion that a healthy environment and a healthy economy are in conflict is simply false. Massachusetts companies have been leaders in lowering their carbon footprint and developing business practices that both protect the environment and expand their businesses. We need to bring this message more forcefully to both Beacon Hill and the public at large."

Shawmut’s environmental impact isn’t merely external; its 2008 fifth floor office renovation is a prime example of renovation that helped save both the earth and money. The 560 Harrison Avenue space was transformed from a standard office area into a spacious, progressive open plan, with ample daylighting. Construction included 89 repurposed light fixtures taken from homes, and more than 77% - or more than 48 tons - of the construction demolition materials were recycled.
