Boston, January 24, 2006—Shawmut Design and Construction recently completed construction of the Yawkey Athletic Center at Boston College and The Shipley Center at Dana Hall School, Wellesley, Mass. On active campuses, surrounded by residential neighborhoods, Shawmut completed the Yawkey Athletic Center and the Shipley Center in just 15 months and 18 months, respectively.
The Yawkey Athletic Center is a new 70,000 square foot, state-of-the-art athletic facility with locker rooms, weight room, training center, full concession areas, a multi-purpose room for visitors and alumni, offices and classrooms for the football program, as well as a Hall of Fame area commemorating the rich history of BC’s football program.
Tied into BC’s Alumni Stadium, the four-story addition was built on a foundation consisting of 82 PIFs, pile caps and grade beams in unpredictable soil conditions. Because the facility is connected to the existing structure open to the elements, unique waterproofing, structural, and mechanical systems were required. ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, Inc., designed the new facility which was completed in time for the team’s 2005 season.
Dana Hall’s Shipley Center is furnished with all the latest and greatest equipment and finishes. The 96,000 square foot athletic center features a new multi-court gymnasium, fitness/health center, two-story climbing wall, state-of-the-art swimming pool, four squash courts, fencing studio, dance and aerobic studio, and other miscellaneous athletic rooms.
The scope of work for the ground-up construction included installation of high-end millwork, a standing-seam metal roof in the gymnasium, brick and curtainwall exterior finishes, and new drainage and landscaping work on the adjacent athletic fields. Boston-based Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott designed the new facility.
In addition to Boston College and Dana Hall School, Shawmut’s Academic Group has worked on New England’s most prestigious campuses, including Harvard University, Brown University, Tufts University, Rhode Island School of Design, Phillips Academy, Dana Hall School, Noble and Greenough School, The Chestnut Hill School and The Fessenden School.
