Shawmut Honored As Valued Partner By Wentworth Alumni Association
"Distinguished Employer Award" recognizes partnership with Wentworth Institute of Technology
Boston, MA – May 26, 2009—Shawmut Design and Construction (www.shawmut.com), a leading national construction management firm, was recently honored by Wentworth Institute of Technology and the Wentworth Alumni Association with their "Distinguished Employer Award" for 2009. The award recognizes the mutually beneficial partnership enjoyed by both organizations over the past decade. From a pool of over 500 firms engaged in on-campus recruiting at Wentworth, Shawmut was singled-out for its strong efforts in supporting student development and its robust campus outreach.
Shawmut has enjoyed a fruitful, recruitment-based relationship with Wentworth Institute of Technology for many years. As a leading national construction manager and general contractor, Shawmut actively recruits Wentworth students each year to support its growing business. Most of these recent college hires enter Shawmut's Construction Management Skills Training (CMST) or Estimating Development (EDP) programs which are specifically designed to train and develop promising young construction professionals over three intensive years. Overall, there are about 100 employees at Shawmut who are alumni of Wentworth, including Managing Director of our Commercial Group Michael Sanchez who is also an active board member of the Wentworth Alumni Association.
In April, in an effort to assist students in fulfilling their co-op requirement during this challenging economy, Shawmut hosted a corporate immersion day in its offices for students who had been unable to find a semester co-op. During the all-day learning event, 27 Shawmut employees took the time to explain in detail the entire construction process from drawings to close-out, and then led groups of students through problem-solving activities to reinforce lessons learned and to encourage effective team collaboration. Wentworth Institute of Technology President Zorica Pantić personally expressed her gratitude to Shawmut for this program stating, "We are grateful to all those at Shawmut who voluntarily dedicated their time to create, support, and participate in this event."
In addition to recruiting, Shawmut staff members actively participate on campus as guest speakers and lectures and as mentors. Additionally, Shawmut has completed several construction projects for Wentworth—including studio renovations for the Department of Architecture—and last year donated its services to build a multimedia conference room and reception area as a gesture of reciprocity and partnership with the school.
"We are honored to be a recipient of this year's Distinguished Employer award. We feel that our relationship with Wentworth has never been one way," said Paul Doherty, Vice President of Field Operations at Shawmut. "Our relationship is one in which Shawmut is integrated into the Wentworth program, providing services such as mentoring and externships, cooperative education experiences, guest speaking, guest lecturing, and involvement in numerous school committees. In short, Shawmut is committed to helping to develop the future leaders of our industry."
