Boston, March 30, 2006 -- Shawmut Design and Construction today announced that it received a 2006 “Aon Build America Award” from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). The award, in the “Building – Renovation category,” recognized Shawmut for its multi-year expansion and renovation of Boston’s historic Trinity Church. The announcement follows on the heels of Shawmut winning the Construction Owners Association of America’s “2005 Project Leadership Award” and the AGC Build New England “Chairman’s Award” – both recognizing the Trinity Church project.
“The Aon Build America Awards are the highest and most sought-after honor within the construction industry, recognizing the nation’s premiere projects, big and small, from across the country,” said AGC CEO Stephen E. Sandherr. “The Build America Award winners embody the industry at its best and truly illustrate how AGC contractors are building America’s quality of life.”
The expansion and renovation of Trinity Church included the exterior and interior restoration of this world-renowned H.H. Richardson-designed structure located in the heart of Boston’s Copley Square. The multi-year, phased program served to preserve the historic structure, integrate new building systems to bring the church up to modern building codes and expand the undercroft to accommodate growing parish program activities.
“Shawmut is honored to have been a part of this project team,” said Thomas Goemaat, President and CEO of Shawmut. He added, “The Trinity Church Expansion and Renovation Program truly exemplified teamwork and innovation, and we want to extend congratulations to Trinity Church, Goody Clancy, and Leggat McCall Properties.”
The Build America Awards contribute directly to the AGC Education and Research Foundation. Since 1993, The Build America Scholarship Program has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships to nearly 80 construction management and civil engineering students. Eighteen projects were selected as winners and three were selected for merit awards at the AGC’s 87th Annual Convention help in Palm Springs, California.
Entries are submitted from every area of general contracting including: federal & heavy, municipal & utilities, highway, design–build, environmental, international and construction management projects in the categories of new and renovation. Winners are chosen by a contractor’s toughest critics, a group of peers and judged on: meeting the challenge of a difficult job; excellence in project management; contractor’s innovation in construction techniques; contractor’s state-of-the-art-advancement; contractor’s sensitivity to the environment and surroundings; excellence in client service and the contractor’s contribution to the community. The awards are a long–standing AGC tradition, beginning in 1972.
