Shawmut Completes Renovation of Two Beacon Hill Residences

Boston, October 22, 2004 — Shawmut Design and Construction added to its residential portfolio with the recent renovation of two Beacon Hill brownstones. Working closely with well-known architects James McNeely Architects and Frank McGuire Architects, Shawmut renovated the historic brownstones into state-of-the-art, luxury residences. While residential projects of similar scope typically take substantially more time, Shawmut completed each renovation - 5,200 square feet and 7,200 square feet - in less than 12 months.

Since both projects were located in historic Beacon Hill, Shawmut worked with the local architectural commissions, and utilized its historic preservation expertise to integrate modern building systems while maintaining each building's historic fabric. In addition to the historic challenges presented in each project, Shawmut's experience working in tight, urban sites throughout Boston helped to overcome the logistical challenges of working within the residential areas of Beacon Hill.

The 5,200 square foot renovation involved construction of a new kitchen and bathrooms with high-end materials, installation of an elliptical staircase and elevator, integration of modern mechanical systems and new architectural finishes throughout the residence.

The 7,200 square foot renovation involved demolition of the interior, installation of a new elliptical staircase, an elevator, extensive millwork, historic plaster preservation and replication, construction of a new kitchen and bathrooms with custom finishes, installation of custom windows and a new slate room with copper flashing and skylight, and integration of state-of-the-art mechanical systems.
