Employee-Owners Featured in Women In Commercial Real Estate Spotlights

Two Shawmut team members—Carolina Zapata and Kerri Hilton—were featured in Women in Commercial Real Estate Spotlights by New York Real Estate Journal and New England Real Estate Journal. The spotlights recognize women in commercial real estate who have been instrumental in driving positive change at their firm and within the industry. From their recent accomplishments to advice for other women in commercial real estate, read what our Shawmut team members said below.

Carolina Zapata, Senior Project Manager – New York

What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of the work my team and I did on the restoration and renovation of the Church of the Epiphany on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. This adaptive reuse effort included an extensive restoration to the church’s sanctuary, a complete interior overhaul to create school, gymnasium, and accessible roof deck spaces, and repairs to the landmarked exterior. I was honored to have the opportunity to revitalize the historic 180-year-old building — it has already impacted hundreds and will continue to do so for decades.

What are the most important factors young women should consider when choosing a firm to build their career with?

Consider which firm will provide you the opportunity to grow into a well-rounded and dynamic builder. It’s important to find a firm that focuses on and prioritizes teaching you technical skills. Especially at a young age, this is a key differentiator and isn’t prioritized enough.

Kerri Hilton, Project Manager – Boston

What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of?

When less experienced members of my team come to me with a question, I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I can not only answer their specific question but also explain the ‘why’ behind it or the process to follow. Then, the next time, they ask for confirmation instead of direction. Those moments remind me how far I have advanced in my career, even when I feel like there is still so much to learn.

What is your vision for the future of women in commercial real estate?

I’d love to see more women in the trades. I’ve had the pleasure of being on OAC (owner-architect-contractor) teams that are majority female and believe representation there will only grow. The day I work with a forewoman will be a banner day. I know she’s out there.
