The transformation of Boston’s seven-acre City Hall Plaza into a modern civic space has introduced universal accessibility, expanded event venues, and critical infrastructure upgrades. This ambitious project features a 12,000-square-foot playscape, 11,000 square feet of terraces for public art, and green infrastructure with 100 new trees and permeable surfaces. The plaza now offers flexible event spaces for up to 25,000 people, seven “plug and play” locations, and a new civic pavilion on Congress Street. Sustainability was a cornerstone, with stormwater retention improvements, LED lighting, and the reuse of 22,500 feet of granite and brick paving. The project also connected Congress and Cambridge Streets with the new Hanover Promenade, which includes shady seating, gathering areas, and a signature water feature. City Hall Plaza stands as a resilient, welcoming destination that aligns with Boston’s environmental and community-focused goals.
