Confidential Healthcare Institution – Physical Therapy and Imaging Center
Brooklyn, NY
The Great Dome, an iconic feature of the MIT campus, has served as a symbol of the Institute since its construction in 1916. The project involved extensive restoration of both the interior and exterior of the Dome. Exterior repairs included a new stainless steel oculus, replicated glass blocks that matched the original design and color, a limestone collar stone, and new flashing for weatherproofing. Inside, the restoration featured a newly glazed laylite to reflect the original aesthetic, along with the careful restoration of the Dome’s original paint colors.
Upgrades to the interior included the installation of new acoustical panels and a state-of-the-art lighting system that enhances both the Dome’s beauty and functionality, providing improved illumination for the Barker Engineering Library and its users.
As the Dome’s watertight seal had deteriorated, it began leaking into the library below. The renovation required the replacement of the copper flashing with materials that would seamlessly integrate with the existing structure. Additionally, the project was executed on a tight schedule, ensuring that library activities could continue uninterrupted.
A team of restoration specialists meticulously restored the Dome’s poured-concrete curvature and steps, utilizing 300 new limestone blocks quarried from the original source used in 1916. A newly applied waterproofing membrane now provides robust protection while preserving the Dome’s historic appearance.
