Shawmut undertook a challenging renovation and vertical expansion project for New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH), adding three new operating rooms and a sterile core atop the existing central sterilization facility. This 7,500-square-foot expansion was meticulously planned and executed to integrate seamlessly with the existing infrastructure while minimizing disruption to ongoing hospital operations.

The project demanded precise logistical planning and stringent infection control measures due to its proximity to active operating rooms. Shawmut’s team implemented phased design releases and coordinated closely with architects to ensure smooth integration.

To address potential impacts on adjacent operating rooms, extensive sound and vibration mock-ups and testing were conducted. All construction activities were carefully scheduled around the hospital’s surgical calendar, and structural connections between the new and existing buildings were sequenced with great attention to detail. The project was completed on schedule, maintaining uninterrupted hospital functions throughout the process.
