The extensive renovation and expansion of the historic Neilson Library, originally opened in 1909, has transformed it into a state-of-the-art intellectual hub for Smith College. Designed in partnership with Maya Lin and Shepley Bulfinch, the 200,000-square-foot project integrates the library’s rich heritage with modern sustainability features, cutting-edge technology, and flexible, collaborative workspaces. The reimagined space includes two new wings, the north supporting active learning and innovation, and the south uniting special collections in a climate-controlled environment. Sustainability elements include a high-performance building envelope and a focus on healthy materials, with the project pursuing LEED Gold accreditation.
