Shawmut undertook the renovation of a vacant Psychiatric Ward on the 4th Floor of the Jones Building to develop a modern, state-of-the-art 16-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Completed on an accelerated schedule, this project was pivotal in expanding the hospital’s capabilities to manage increased patient volume. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Shawmut’s expedited efforts enabled the ICU to open one month ahead of schedule.

The project involved a significant upgrade to the existing infrastructure, including the removal of an outdated generator and installation of a new underground fuel tank system and rooftop generator. Shawmut’s VDC/BIM team was integral to this process, performing full MEP coordination and BIM modeling to ensure seamless integration of these systems. The new ICU, now a Level II trauma space, significantly enhances the hospital’s capacity and readiness.
