Shawmut partnered with Danny Meyer of Union Square Hospitality Group to move the 30-year-old Union Square Cafe into its new home on Park Avenue. The 14,500 square-foot restaurant was designed and built to embody the original Union Square Cafe location, and includes a main dining room, private dining room, mezzanine seating, and state-of-the-art kitchen. The main bar that is exactly the same length as the old bar—down to the inch—and the main dining room has double height ceilings with custom pendant light fixtures that hang at exactly the same height as the old location. A grand feature staircase leads guests to one of the multiple mezzanine terraces—another tribute to the old space. The mezzanine bar is the original bar removed from the original 16th Street location, transported, reinstalled, and restored. The custom millwork and finishes include wide-plank cherry floors and dark-green wainscoting.
