The historic Crest Theatre, originally opened in 1940, has been transformed into the UCLA Nimoy Theater through a $24 million renovation. This project revitalizes the 440-seat movie house into a modern, 299-seat live performance venue, enhancing the cultural landscape of the Westwood neighborhood in Los Angeles. The renovation, completed in partnership with CAP UCLA and BAR Architects & Interiors, reimagines the theater with a new lobby, bar, and flexible seating arrangements that include cabaret tables and standing room options.
The redesigned theater features a state-of-the-art performance space with superior acoustics, including a line array audio system, LED-based lighting, and flexible rigging infrastructure. The renovation preserved key historic elements such as the Art Deco marquee, light fixtures, and a 230-foot mural depicting a 1930s Los Angeles cityscape. The theater’s design also emphasizes accessibility and sustainability, incorporating gender-inclusive restrooms, ramps, an elevator, and efficient energy use.
Located near UCLA’s campus, The Nimoy serves as a new cultural hub, enriching the city’s vibrant arts scene and offering a dynamic space for community gatherings and performances.
