Shawmut renovated a historic 1950s-era motel to create Nobu Ryokan – an exclusive, intimate 16-room retreat on Malibu’s Carbon Beach. The team contended with the ocean tide and excavated beach sand in a confined space to bring this one-of-a-kind hotel to life. Nobu Ryokan boasts stained teak, ipe wood, bathroom walls and floors wrapped in limestone, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors. No two suites are the same, and Shawmut constructed courtyards and balconies custom to each space.
